Additional Details

Published in Harper's Weekly, 22 March 1862 as part of a three-strip illustration, where it is credited to Waud. Waud has captioned the image faintly in pencil "New Earthworks, Camp Behind Trees, Battery Shipping Point (Half Moon Shape), Entrance to Quantico Creek," which also appears as a subcaption in the published engraving. The battery at Shipping Point, quite near the modern Marine Corps base at Quantico, had helped the Confederates prevent shipping into Washington.
